Conference Activities & Talks

  • EMDR : Effective Psychotherapy for PTSD(How Can Psychotherapy Exercise Its Power to Move the Society Forward?), Ihchii Masaya, Jpn J Psychosom Med,   2012 , EMDR is valid and empirically supported psychotherapy, which is recommended for PTSD. The application range of EMDR is considered to be wider than PTSD, since traumatic memories are related to various mental disorders, and which are well treated by EMDR. Diagnostic criteria of PTSD is being revised for DSM-5, and the subjective criteria in criterion A seems to be erased, because peri-traumatic dissociative symptoms can predict the severity of PTSD. The characteristics of PTSD include both intrusive and dissociative symptoms. Psychotherapies must focus on the wide range of these symptoms. I take general view of EMDR procedures and the therapeutic model : the adaptive information processing model, where EMDR can link traumatic memory with positive aspects of events, is discussed in detail. When applying EMDR to PTSD clients, traumatic memories must be identified throughout the life-long history, so that they can get adequate improvements. A forty-year old male civil servant was treated by EMDR, for his traumatic memories due to false accusations by the police and for abuse treatment from his parents. Treating the negative histories comprehensively can decrease suicidal ideation and depressive symptoms and recover healthy function.
