The focus of this empirical study is to study specific practices that can stimulate communication with intellectually disabled people. The musicality of words and body movements (gestures) were observed and analyzed from the interdisciplinary fields of linguistics, developmental science and education practice, for connections between the music or storytelling activities and an acceleration of communication abilities. Observations took place in the classrooms and during leisure activities. Our findings suggest that an interactive musical environment with stories has the potential to improve the quality of life of intellectually disabled people by providing the means for growth in their ability to communicate. By making inroads into the lives of the intellectually disabled through these interactive musical activities, we can benefit from the increased contributions of the disabled by gaining a wider perspective as a society.

In this research, we sought out better way for children with profound multiple disabilities to join their societies. Case studies of good practices in special school classes and organizations of communication support for children and people with disabilities in UK were performed in order to find tips on how to communicate mutually with those children. Focusing on ‘multisensory’ storytelling, we made Japanese multisensory storybooks based on BagBooks that is a charity organization publishing multisensory books for children and people with learning disabilities in UK. We also held a one-day seminar and workshop of multisensory storytelling. And main part of narrative intervention program written by Joffe was translated into Japanese and looked over to modify it and to make the Japanese program of narrative intervention.

This study has investigated what linguistic factors contribute to activation of communication by people with intellectual impairments, and tried to find clues to effective methods which enable enjoyable communication. Focusing on auditory and visual stimulation, we observed music therapy sessions practiced at a school for special education. We have done discourse analysis of the video-camera recorded data, which led us to elucidate how communicative actions are triggered by onomatopoeic expression s and singing rich in sound symbolism and vivacious rhythm. More importantly, such activities seemed to yield comforting relationships as well, in which participants could easily share joy of music-rich communication. Based on the result, we experimentally produced and distributed some DVD teaching materials, which we hope would help the cognitively impaired people with their daily tooth-brushing routines. The validity of such teaching aids should be verified in further studies.

Observing onomatopoeic utterances by teachers in special school classes, the prosody and rhythm of their utterances, together with the teachers' expressive gestures, contributed to the effective transmission of teachers' educational intentions, which evoked teacher-pupils communication.

We were for the purpose of considering a knowledge system and the development about a language / the cognition / an act from the many sides of psychology, linguistics, pedagogy, handicapped children pathology by investigating the expression of onomatopoeia. As the result of the research in the country and Korea, we were able to get some knowledge. 1.Children used onomatopoeia to copy the world of the outside in a sound and a voice, and gradually, they used it to express the complicated relations between the world of the outside and their senses. 2.For the effectiveness to use onomatopoeia for by education / nursing activity, activation of a class is nominated for the first. 3.Language and a sense of language of neighboring adults who said a parent and a teacher give big influence to expression of onomatopoeia of a child. 4.In Korea, They make much of onomatopoeia in preschool education / school education / education of physically and mentally handicapped children for ability for self-expression upbringing. We lean from Korea education and want to suggest class development and teaching materials development of onomatopoeia use in the country.

To assess subjective QOL(quality of life) of children with both motor and intellectual disabilities. Participants (aged 6-18 years) were 90 subjects and were interviewed personally. The questionnaire is consists of 36 questions covering the 8 domains, which were based on the QOL-26 WHO. The subjects were divided into four groups (A : children with mild motor and mild intellectual disabilities, B : children with severe motor and mild intellectual disabilities, C : children with mild motor and severe intellectual disabilities, D : children with severe motor and severe intellectual disabilities). Result : They answered by way of the Language, eyes, expression such as smile, motion or tense of extremities and so on. Most of children answered that they are happy in general, their needs are satisfied, and they are content with supports given by the people around them. Total scores of group C (83.5±12.1:mean±SD) and group D (82.7±9.0) were significantly lower than group A (92.0±9.0) and group B (90.5±9.0). As for details of each domain, in "Self-impression", "Self-determination and Choices" and "Chances to do", score of group D was lower than score of group A. Conclusion : These results indicate that the lack of understanding and insufficiency in preparing choices affect children's QOL, and better supporting system of needed.
